Manuscripts of poems and prose, typescripts, notebooks, printed material, and other papers of author and poet John Ciardi. The largest portion of the collection consists of the printer's copy of Mid-Century American Poets (1950), edited by Ciardi, along with correspondence of major American poets associated with its production.

A famous collector of Walt Whitman manuscripts, he also had a large library of rare books and historical manuscripts. Born in London and raised in Peterborough, Ontario, one of eight children, he worked in his father's store, leaving school after the 7th grade. He came to Detroit in 1922 and sold shoes and oil burners, later became president Argo Oil Company.
